Appreciate that, especially coming from a veteran commentrator on UP politics. :-) Am still trying to catch up.Sunny Singhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02687722552329432572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823892684510738201.post-78460575004973960992007-05-17T09:41:00.000+01:002007-05-17T09:41:00.000+01:00Dear Sunny,Great Show!I compliment you on your pas...Dear Sunny,

Great Show!I compliment you on your passionate political analysis of the 'BMW Elephant' making deep inroads into the Hindi heartland.
I always liked your rivetting writing style but didn't actually know that you are so adept at writing on the polity of the nation.
A brilliant repsonse, I wish to point out that Maya has spread her 'Jaal' far and wide and if she can pull through this term as UP CM, there is no stopping her from becoming the country's PM.
Call it her pugnacious spirit or her ability to live out her dreams, she has the spunk to challenge the traditional mores of Indian (read UP) society
Like you rightly point out, her inclusive politics has paid rich dividends but there is still talk that her brand of social engineering, her transition from Bahujan to Sarvajan is fraught with danger.
Her Brahmin card may well be her undoing since the upper caste in this region is known for its opportunism. It may dump BMW if she aggressively pursues her Dalit/Ambedkar Agenda.
Murmurs of dissent can already be seen with her 'afterthought' induction of S C Mishra as Cabinet Minister if not Deputy Chief Minister.
I must also confess I had a fairly successful run as a Columnist trashing her (Mayawati's) imperious ways in Times, Lucknow and for once hope that she doesn't give me ground to start writing another column on her foibles.
Great 'fodder' for thought,Sunny!
Chander MahadevChander Mahadevhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07793857471539205812noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823892684510738201.post-27113981290089204972007-05-14T13:57:00.000+01:002007-05-14T13:57:00.000+01:00Hey Girish. Where else would I wear my patriotism?...Hey Girish. Where else would I wear my patriotism? I know loads is wrong with UP - am from there and see the rural and urban mess. But I also see the changes and the developments.
My logic is: BMW deserves respect for her achievement whether we like it or not. Dig a bit on leaders from other democratic countries and they were mostly born to privilege and wealth - one reason the West loves the Gandhis. They can identify and recognize them.
Re: her politics, I dont think much of them. But if the voter is willing to use votes beyond caste, she may be forced into accountability.
And yes, ever the optimist and patriot. :-)Sunny Singhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02687722552329432572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2823892684510738201.post-15798164185258554562007-05-14T08:32:00.000+01:002007-05-14T08:32:00.000+01:00Hi there. That's a typical Sunny Singh post. May be her feel of common man's pulse too. But that's about all.She and her clan get to become CMs not because they are good but because we are bad (plain black and white and no grey)and 'deserve to get such leaders'.
If being Brahmin, Dalit, Muslim and so on still fetch us votes and the fact is they do, then that certainly is not something to be proud of.
That Manmohan Singh has to seek back door entry to retain his Prime Ministership doesnot augur well for us. But that is today's congress culture. More of drawing room politics than going into the midst of people and feeling their pulse. Someone has to tell Rahul that instead of projecting himself as Prime Ministerial candidate he had better set up a full time office in UP and sit there and work for the people and then seek mandate. Like it or not he has a head start over others because of his lineage but he is squandering it all away.
Till such time some good people come out of their comfort zones and decide to take a plunge in politics, we have to bear with the likes of Mayawati.
Girish DuaAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
